EV Battery Crush Test in Different Standards

BELL Battery Safety Test Equipment

July 17, 2023

As the development of the electric vehicle battery, it is essential to conduct abuse tests according to different international testing standards, such as UN38.3, UL1642 and so on. Only by doing that, the manufacturers can detect some potential risks before rolling their products to the market, which greatly helps improve the safety and quality. So today, in this article, I'd like to discuss about the difference of crush tests in various standards, including ECE 100, UL2580 and UL1973. I believe you will gain a lot after reading it. Battery crush test plays an important role in examing battery's performance.

Understanding the different requirement of each crush test

When it comes to the point of battery crush test, I always think about my customers' case before. Most of them didn't know what standard is suitable for their samples. Even worse, few of them insisted on using a cell testing standard to look for battery abuse test equipment for their battery module or battery pack. To some extent, it's a little bit funny. I'm getting used to explained it for my customers each time.

1) Regarding the crush test of UN1973, it is used for test LER battery. The testing specimen should be crush between the crush head fixture and crush plate with force about 100±6kN. After testing, if battery doesn't generate fire, explosion or leakage, then the sample will pass this test.

2) Regarding the crush test of ECE R100, it mainly focuses on testing battery pack like electric bus or car battery. This standard requests the crush force at least 100kN but no more than 105kN.

3) Regarding the crush test of UL2580, its testing object is the same as ECE R100's. However, it requires different force range from 100±6kN. Besides, it also requires a three-head crush fixture and a single-head crush fixture. The pictures of these two fixtures are as below shown:
